Being a car guy in Wisconsin usually means I’m stuck inside my shop working on my car all winter. Which really means that I’m driving on the sim, scrolling Instagram, and shoveling my driveway. So when Flat Out Friday and the Mama Tried show made their way back to Milwaukee, it was a no-brainer to get out of the house and check out some of the best and coolest motorcycle builds around.

There’s plenty of boonie bike races and parties going on during the week leading up to the big night at the Fiserv Forum, the Flat Out Friday races. Right when I walked into the pit area I could tell it was about to be another wild year of racing. Almost immediately I saw a half naked (the back half) dude, a horse getting ready to race on a motorcycle, and the Harley-Davidson Factory Race Team members all hanging out because of motorcycles. That’s when it started to not feel so different than hanging out in a drift paddock. From the pros competing to the guys that just want to have a good time, it’s still just for the love of the game.

The next day is when the Mama Tried show started and took over the city for 2 days. A bike show in one of the biggest music venues Milwaukee has, The Rave/Eagles Ballroom. The venue floor was filled with some of the nicest, most rare, and most unique motorcycle builds that exist. I don’t claim to be the most knowledgeable guy when it comes to bikes, but I know I was impressed for so many reasons while looking at these builds. The history and stories behind some of the bikes made them priceless so to see them up close felt no different than if I was looking at some of my favorite drift builds up close. The quality and time and passion put into these projects was obvious.

While I’ll never replace drift cars with motorcycles, going to see a whole different world of people with a passion that turns out not to be so different than mine was just what I needed in the middle of a classic Wisconsin winter. Now I’m just counting down the days til I’m waking up early to make it to the next driver’s meeting so I can drive my damn car.
